Dottie is new to Homeless Hounds and has gone straight into a lovely foster home, this is what her foster mummy has to say about her:
Dottie is 12 years old and loves people. She is beautifully marked with a shiny coat and we suspect she is crossed with a cocker spaniel. She is a striking looking dog. The previous owners say Dottie was fine with their grandchildren. She was allowed to sit on beds and sofas but this has not been permitted in the foster home as It would be a cause of jealousy between her and the fosterer’s dogs.
Dottie was never walked so going on walks now is very exciting for her, but her paws are very soft so walks need to be increased gradually till her pads harden up. When the walk starts she pulls on the lead but soon settles down once she starts to use her nose and sniff things. For a dog that hasn’t been walked much recently, she isn’t nervous of being outside and likes to explore. She was reported as being afraid of fireworks but this may be a thing of the past because her hearing has deteriorated. Of course, being hard of hearing she does not have any recall, although in the house and garden she will come to you if she can see you or come to a loud handclap which she seems able to hear. She is 16 kgs which is a good weight for her.
She is currently living with a male Schnauzer and a female Cavapoo but we think she is best rehomed as the only dog. The fosterer has found that for Dotty food (hers or humans eating human food) can be a source of conflict between her and other dogs. She is non reactive to other dogs whilst out on walks. She loves going in the car. Be aware though that she would leap into any open car door you pass on the street. She also makes a leap to get in the car as soon as you open the door and likewise on exiting and this is a work in progress. In the car she travels in a crate as she gets excited and ties herself in knots in the doggy seat belt. Without proper restraint she will jump into the front or the boot or out of the window if open. She can jump over a 3 feet 6 inch fence to go exploring so needs a secure garden.
Dottie is reported to have lived with a cat. We have not tried her with cats in the home but when one runs past us outside she reacts like she would like to give chase if she wasn’t on a lead. Dottie shows separation anxiety and gets distressed and will bark if left. This is lessening overtime but it will take time for Dottie to be comfortable being left on her own. Dottie follows you from room to room at present and wants to be curled up near your feet or by your side to feel settled and safe. This applies in the car as well and she gets worried and barks if you leave her in the car alone.
